The Ontake Method: Rhythmic Japanese Bodywork
The Ontake Method is a Japanese technique that uses a small bamboo tool to deliver gentle, rhythmic tapping to the body. I learned this method through Oran Kivity, and it has become a lovely addition to the treatments I offer at Peaks & Points Acupuncture.
Ontake works with the body's channel system, using specific zones according to the channels being treated. Rather than simply working directly on the area where a symptom is felt, the treatment follows the pathways and relationships of the channels to encourage better balance and movement throughout the body.
The tapping can sometimes be performed to a metronome, creating a consistent rhythm and tempo. This rhythmic quality can be deeply relaxing, while also providing a very specific form of stimulation to the body.
Ontake can be useful as part of an approach to a wide range of concerns, including muscular tension and pain, back and neck problems, joint discomfort, headaches, digestive complaints, menstrual and hormonal symptoms, stress, fatigue and general nervous-system regulation.
I offer Ontake both as a stand-alone treatment using the bamboo max, (can be booked online) and I also regularly incorporate it into my acupuncture sessions. Combining Ontake with acupuncture allows me to work with both the channels and acupuncture points, creating a treatment that can be tailored to what your body needs on the day.
If you enjoy gentle, rhythmic treatments or are curious about experiencing something different from traditional acupuncture, Ontake can be a wonderful treatment in its own right — or a complementary part of your acupuncture session.
